What WHR means
Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a simple metric calculated by dividing waist circumference by hip circumference. WHR provides insight into fat distribution — abdominal (apple-shaped) fat is associated with higher cardiometabolic risk than fat stored around the hips and thighs (pear-shaped). Health guidelines often use WHR, alongside BMI and waist circumference, to refine risk assessment.
This calculator produces a ratio and a basic category. Interpretation depends on sex, age and overall health context. WHR is a screening tool rather than a diagnostic measure — if you are concerned about risk factors, consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive assessment.
How to measure
Measure waist at the narrowest point or just above the navel, and measure hips at the widest point of the buttocks while standing relaxed. Use a flexible tape and avoid compressing the skin for consistent results. Repeat measurements and use averages if needed.
